It must be something about the new year that makes me nostalgic for Xanga. It looks like it was a year ago that I last blogged on here, and a year ago that I decided to take a picture every day. That probably lasted about two weeks. The song idea was golden: A song a month for documentation and practical purposes. I got maybe 6/12 songs done for 2008. Oddly enough, march, september, august, and november were pretty dull.
What's on tap for this year? Good question. There's bound to be a host of new and exciting challenges. Things to look forward to: thesis, graduation, nvidia, studio, finishing 2008 album. Things to dread: thesis, graduation, nvidia, studio, finishing 2008 album.
I was thinking about when I first got my most recent computer, and how I had heard about some people that took pictures of themselves every day for a year. After much deliberation, I decided I would give it a shot, and a set on Flickr called A Photo A Day. I've already missed one day (yesterday), but such is life. I like looking at myself, so this should be a pretty sweet experiment to see how I change over the course of the next year. There's lots of opportunity for change, and what better way to embrace it than with pictures of Carl. I'll try to make them interesting too: different locations, different poses, and different emotions. Right now I've basically got one pose, and it's just the reflective thinker pose, but rest assured, I will most certainly stop thinking soon.
... And Also A Song
While it would be sweet to have a song each and every day, I don't think I have the time or energy for that. I do, however have an audio blog that features songs and recordings I make with my friends. I saw this commercial on TV with some guys doing a spoken-word poetry reading-type-thing, and now I think I could see myself doing that. It would be a bit of a departure from my rapping blog, but similar in nature. Maybe I'll do a once a week thing, to get a more zoomed out view of my life (as opposed to a daily picture). And then... once a month a song? That might be pushing it, but it's an admirable goal to be sure. Start counting, today is day 4, week 1, month 1. Ready? Go!
AKA, The best day of my life! So, here's the story:
I was walking into Sieble Center right after a meeting with my Senior Project group this morning (roughly 9:30am), when I spied something on the bench...
Naturally, being intrigued by a book about cats, I took a closer look. The bookmark sticking out of the book reads, "Hi! I'm a free book on an adventure. You see, I am traveling around the world, making new friends. I hope I've met another friend in you. Please go to www.BookCrossings.com, a free service, and enter my BCID number. You'll discover where I've been and who has read me, and you can let them know that I'm safe here in your hands. Then read me and release me, and I will continue on my adventure."
Awesome! I immediately grabbed it and sat down to read it. It's an amazing story about a cat's plight for a new holiday: Cat Day. It's not a children's book per se, but it is definitely light hearted and fun. It has many colorful pictures of cats doing the things we all know cats do when we're not looking. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Bottom Line
I plan to investigate this further by going to BookCrossing.com and registering my find. Then, I think I will send it off to Italy with my friend from CS 423. Look for more results this weekend...
As much as I would LOVE to spend every waking hour sitting in the dark, windowless basement of Sieble Center, slowly going blind from the dull glow of a monitor reflecting yet another ridiculously involved machine problem, I must take a break to feed myself so that I can continue fulfilling your goal of completely dominating my life.
